At times, dogs can become unpredictable and aggressive, leading to dog bites. According to DogsBite.org, approximately 1,000 people receive emergency medical attention daily because of dog bites.

See below for the most common scenarios that lead to dog attacks. Understanding the risks might help prevent serious injuries or even death.

Interacting with unfamiliar dogs

One of the most common situations where people get dog bites is when interacting with dogs they do not know. This can happen in various settings, such as at a dog park, while out for a walk, or even while visiting someone’s home. Often, people assume that all dogs are friendly and want attention or pets, but this is not always the case. Approaching an unfamiliar dog can be dangerous, especially if the dog feels threatened or defensive.

Children are also at a higher risk of getting dog bites, as they may not know how to approach or handle a dog properly. Additionally, children may not recognize the warning signs that a dog feels uncomfortable or threatened, such as growling or showing its teeth.

Breaking up a dog fight

Another common situation where people get dog bites is when they are trying to protect their dog. This can happen when two dogs interact, and one becomes aggressive toward the other. To protect their pet, owners may try to intervene physically, leading to bites or scratches from the aggressive dog.

Dog bites can occur in various situations, including when interacting with unfamiliar dogs, trying to protect one’s pet or when children do not understand the risks. By being aware of the potential risks and taking appropriate precautions, we can work to reduce the number of dog bites and keep both humans and dogs safe.
