Holiday travel safety tips for Austin residents and visitors

On Behalf of | Dec 10, 2024 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

As the holiday season approaches, many of us are gearing up for road trips to visit loved ones, enjoy festive events like the Austin Trail of Lights, or simply take in the sights and sounds of the city’s holiday cheer.

However, a serious car accident can derail these plans (and much more). With increased traffic and potential hazards on the road, it’s essential to prioritize safety to ensure a joyful and stress-free holiday experience.

Watch out for drunk drivers

Unfortunately, the holiday season sees an increase in drunk driving incidents, especially between Christmas and New Year’s Day. To stay safe and avoid becoming a statistic, plan ahead by designating a sober driver, using ride-sharing services or booking a hotel room for the night. If you do plan to drive, stay alert and watch out for erratic behavior on the road.

Secure your seasonal cargo

Nothing ruins holiday cheer faster than a Christmas tree flying off your car roof on Loop 360. To avoid getting hurt, keep a safe distance from hauling vehicles and drivers who may not be able to see well due to visual obstructions.

To keep your own cargo safe, make sure you:

  • Use strong ropes or bungee cords to secure items.
  • Double-check all ties before hitting the road.
  • Avoid overloading your vehicle.

Your perfectly picked pine tree, shopping bags and food supplies should arrive at your home, not on someone else’s windshield.

Beware of confused out-of-towners

Austin attracts many visitors during the holidays, and most will not be familiar with our local roads. Be patient and give extra room to drivers who seem lost or hesitant, especially near popular destinations like the Austin Trail of Lights or those festive pop-up bars around Rainey Street.

Plan for traffic delays and congestion

With so many people driving around this time of year, expect delays and increased congestion. Leave early and consider using less congested routes. Keep an eye on traffic apps for real-time updates to avoid bottlenecks. These precautions can make for a calmer, less agitated and aggressive trip and prevent car crashes.

By taking these simple precautions, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday travel experience for yourself and your loved ones. A safe arrival is one of the best gifts you can give this holiday season.
