Speeding increases accident risks

On Behalf of | Jun 1, 2022 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Speeding may be the scourge of roads throughout Texas. While many factors might contribute to an accident, speeding ranks high on the list of moving violations that could cause a disastrous crash. Speeding undermines the ability to drive safely in many ways. Yet, many drivers embrace this reckless action behind the wheel. Perhaps some drivers get away with speeding so often that it becomes an ingrained habit. One day, the behavior could lead to a terrible accident.

The dangers of speeding

Studies suggest that every increase of 10 mph of speed boosts the chances of dying in a collision. Speed increases velocity, and a crash’s impact could be catastrophic when traveling too fast. There are other ways the laws of physics effects a car’s performance when it speeds. Navigating curving roads becomes harder, and a driver may lose control of the vehicle when navigating turns. Bad weather conditions might make things even worse.

Drivers may not realize how speeding impacts reaction time until they find themselves unable to avoid a collision. A driver might try to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting a bicyclist or rear-ending another car, but the speed could make doing so impossible.

Speeding and consequences

Speeding is more dangerous than the average person likely realizes. Many built-in safety features work to protect drivers and passengers involved in motor vehicle accidents. However, airbags, seat belts, and other safety features may lose effectiveness the faster a car moves.

Consequences for speeding-related car crashes might extend beyond any injuries a negligent driver suffers. If a driver causes others to suffer injuries, the driver may face significant civil consequences. Victims would likely seek compensation through a personal injury lawsuit.
